What do you search for within yourself?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for February 08, 2009:
I search for forgiveness. I want to forgive myself for mistakes made and forgive others who have hurt me or done me harm. It is a very difficult task. Forgiveness of myself is alot harder than forgiving other people. I figured it would be harder to forgive others. I am just tired of being mad all the time, and it takes too much energy to hate, so I have to forgive so I can lead a fuller life.

Help

Dear Tabitha,
When i could not forgive some people who had hurt me financially, emotionally, and slandered me when I was vulnerable, I asked my Buddhist teacher for spiritual guidance. This is what he told me.
“Stop torturing yourself. You’re suffering because these people did not act and think like you think they should have. That is just what happened at that time.”
Things happen, things keep changing. Change yourself and how you view what happened in the past. Even if it hard, we should do it anyway. You have everything to gain.
As another wise person said, “To be truly free, give up all hope of a better past.”.
Try to tell yourself “that’s just what happened THEN. This is NOW”.
((hugs))
